Crossing Continents: How Studying in Rome and London Redefined My College Experience
Updated: May 13, 2025
How Studying Abroad Transformed My College Experience
Studying abroad is often described as a life-changing experience, and now, having lived through it, I can wholeheartedly say that it is true. My decision to study abroad was not just an academic choice, but also a personal journey that reshaped my worldview, enriched my college experience, and helped me grow in ways I never could have imagined.
The Leap into the Unknown
When I first considered studying abroad, I was excited but also a little nervous. The thought of leaving behind the familiar comforts of home, friends, and my routine was daunting. However, I was drawn to the idea of exploring a new culture, traveling, making new friends, and gaining international business knowledge.
As I arrived in Italy, I was immediately struck by how different everything felt—the language, the customs, and the very atmosphere. I immediately realized that this was an opportunity to grow my own independence, and to step out of my comfort zone.
Academic Growth and Global Perspective
Studying abroad at the American Universtiy of Rome, not only exposed me to a new academic environment but also challenged me to think differently. The educational systems, teaching methods, and even the campus was different from what I was used to. Spoiler alert, AUR’s campus is miniscule in comparison to Michigan State’s campus.
One of the most significant academic benefits of studying abroad was gaining a global perspective. Many of the assignments that I completed were based on the marketing ideals of Italy. To complete these, we had tours of the city, explored some of the best food and shopping spots in Rome, and talked to locals. It was no longer about learning from textbooks; it was about learning from the world and the people around us.
Personal Growth and Independence
Living in a foreign country, far from family and friends, forced me to become more independent and self-reliant. I had to navigate everything from finding my way around a new city to managing daily life in a different culture. Simple tasks like grocery shopping or using public transportation became small adventures, each teaching me more about the local way of life and, in turn, about myself.
This newfound independence also helped me grow personally. I became more confident in my ability to handle challenges and more open to trying new things. Whether it was learning to navigate the train station or communicate with locals in a language I was not familiar with, each experience contributed to my own personal growth.
Cultural Immersion and Social Connections
One of the most enriching aspects of studying abroad was the cultural immersion. I was not just a tourist visiting a new place; I was living there, experiencing the culture firsthand. From participating in local festivals, like the Festa della Repubblica (Italian National Day), to exploring historic sites, like the Collosseum, I immersed myself in the culture and traditions of the country. This deepened my appreciation for the diversity and richness of cultures around the world.
Socially, studying abroad introduced me to a whole new set of friends, as I did not know anyone on my program before arriving in Italy. I made friends with fellow Michingan State students that were also studying abroad.. These connections, forged through shared experiences, have become some of the most meaningful relationships in my life. We learned from each other, supported each other, and created memories that will last a lifetime.
Challenges and Resilience
Of course, studying abroad was not without its challenges. There were moments of homesickness, cultural misunderstandings, and academic difficulties. But these challenges were also growth opportunities. They taught me resilience and adaptability. I learned to navigate through uncertainty, find solutions to problems, and keep moving forward even when things didn’t go as planned.
The Lasting Impact
Looking back, studying abroad was one of the best decisions I made during my college years at Michigan State University. It transformed my academic journey, expanded my horizons, and allowed me to grow more than I could have ever imagained. The experiences and lessons I gained abroad have continued to influence me long after returning home to Michigan.
Overall, studying abroad is more than just an academic experience; it is a journey of personal growth and discovery. It challenges you, inspires you, and leaves a lasting impact on your life. If you ever are allowed the invaluable opportunity to study abroad, I highly encourage you to take the leap.
It is a decision you won’t regret.
